The environmental protections agency (EPS) has authored guidelines as to when a radon test is really necessary. A few common misconceptions are that when a home has a walk out basement or is slab on grade a radon test is not necessary. A more surprising admission is that the EPA recommends radon testing for any dwelling up to three floors. This would naturally include condo buildings.
The EPA suggests that homes be tested every two years. Having a home on slab does not preclude that home from its ability of testing high for radon. Having a walk out basement does not preclude it from having high levels of radon. A radon test should be performed by a licensed and trained professional. An individual who follows the NRPP guidelines and adheres to all proper testing protocols. It is recommended that you speak to a home inspector familiar with your area and type of home before declining rate on testing.
Remember the need to test for radon has nothing to do with the construction or style of a home. What really matters is whether the home was constructed near/over a radon source. There is no way to tell if there are elevated levels without testing. Radon is an odourless tasteless gas. now it is fair to say that a slab on grade has lower probability since only the slab itself is closest to the earth whereas a basement you’d have five sources of radon all four walls and beneath the slab. contact the home inspector who is familiar with testing and schedule your testing today.
