After graduating from the University of Maryland in Business Management, Dan Deist worked as an executive for Fiserv Securities—a Fortune 500 company. For over a decade, Dan worked long hours, traveling all over the United States as vice president and director of operations for Fiserv Securities. However, when they asked him to relocate to Philadelphia, he decided it was time to hang up his suits for an opportunity to own his own business. He was sitting in a dentist’s office, riffling anxiously through the pages of an entrepreneur magazine, when he came across an article about up-and-coming industries for 2004—“Home Inspections” was on the list. Since Dan had experience working in construction—before Fiserv—he figured he could easily learn to become a home inspector and soon enrolled in a Manassas, Virginia inspection school.
Dan opened Top To Bottom Services, in September of 2004. In the early days of the business—late 2004 into 2005—the home inspection company was a fledgling startup, taking shape out of a spare room in Dan’s house and operating through a single flip-phone. About a year into this new endeavor, Dan was introduced to another entrepreneurial opportunity.
A close friend and Realtor® suggested he start installing real estate signposts for agents because, “the market was void of dependable and professional service providers,” and he would have access to tons of new agents. The idea was that once a realtor learned of Dan’s sign business, he or she would get to know Dan professionally and eventually trust him enough to allow him to serve clients for home inspections. The plan worked perfectly!
As Top To Bottom Services grew—with the help of the signpost installation department—Dan set forth with a clear mission in mind: to serve the community with honesty and integrity, to provide quality service at a fair price, and to give back when able. This was a recipe for continued success and company growth.
Top To Bottom Services has grown to become one of the largest privately-owned inspection companies in the DMV. Dan has also become sort of a “serial-entrepreneur”; in addition to Top To Bottom Services, Dan also owns a mold remediation franchise—a software company responsible for managing Signpost placement requests—SignTraker Technologies—and eventually split the signpost installation department into its own entity—Real Estate SignTraker. In the more recent years, Top To Bottom Services has expanded to offer not only residential and commercial inspections, but also a complete suite of ancillary services, like radon testing, mold sampling, lead testing, water quality and septic inspections, to name a few.
Top To Bottom Services has never lost the commitment to those original three core values; however, they are certainly able to do more for charity now, thanks to their rapid growth! In 2020, Top To Bottom Services rolled out their Charitable Contributions Dollar-to-Dollar Match program. Every client is offered the opportunity to help support a different local or national charity each month, and Top To Bottom Services will match their contributions; a feat Dan wasn’t sure would ever be possible.
